Veterinarians:


Dr. John Cunningham, DVM, Owner - General Practice


Dr. Cunningham was born and raised in Bethesda, Maryland.  He attended St. Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania and completed undergraduate studies in 1970.  He received his DVM degree from Araneta University College of Veterinary Medicine in the Philippines in 1977.  From 1978-1981 he worked as an associate veterinarian at Friendship Animal Hospital in Washington D.C.  In 1982 he opened the Highland Veterinary Hospital and has been certified by the State Board of Examiners to practice veterinary medicine in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Florida and Washington D.C.  He resides in Olney, Maryland with his wife Lucrecia.  They have two children, two cats and have been active in greyhound rescue over the years.  







Dr. Karen Settle, DVM, Associate Veterinarian 


Dr. Settle grew up in Massachusetts and received a Bachelor's degree in Animal Science from the University of Connecticut. She then went on to the University of Florida where she received her DVM degree. She practiced small animal medicine in northern Florida for 13 years before moving to Italy with her family. Dr. Settle then moved to Maryland and began working at HVH in March 2008. Dr. Settle has been married for 22 years, has 2 children, a papillon and a hermit crab. 




Dr. Holly Polf, DVM, Ultrasonographer


Dr. Polf is a board certified veterinary radiologist who provides on-site ultrasound services for the patients of HVH since 2014.  She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from  Baylor University.  She graduated with her DVM degree from Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. Dr. Polf has preformed thousands of exams and taught at ultrasound continuing education seminars for veterinary practitioners and veterinary students.  






Technicians:


Mishta

Mishta has been at the Highland Veterinary Hospital since January 2014. She is one of the veterinary assistants and is responsible for handling the front office duties as well as patient care needs. She is currently completing her Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health at the University of Maryland, College Park and hopes to pursue veterinary medicine upon graduation. Mishta is the proud owner of a tuxedo cat named "Ollie" and enjoys playing intramural sports and participating in volunteer events with the Pre-Vet Society at UMD.







Crissi                                               

Crissi was born and raised in Howard County on a farm where she had raised cattle, pigs, chickens, goats, and horses. She has always had equine interests and has ridden in numerous equestrian events and was also a 4-H member for many years. She is a proud mother of an eight year old daughter who has also taken interest in horse showmanship also. She has been working at the Highland Veterinary Hospital since 2001, where she has great experience handling the office as well as providing quality veterinary assistance for our veterinarians, clients, and patients. She looks forward coming to work and enjoys learning something new every day.



                                        


Gigi

Gigi lives in Laurel with her husband John. They have three children Amelia, Matthew, and Ian. She grew up in Mississippi surrounded by dogs, cats, horses and assorted farm animals. Gigi has volunteered for The Animal Welfare Society of Howard County fostering dogs and cats for 15 years. She has been a surgical technician for several years and continues to work in the operating room on a regular basis. She has recently joined Highland Veterinary Hospital as a veterinary assistant. Gigi currently shares her home with two dogs, Bob and Addison, two cats Buster and Cuddles, B.J. the cockatiel, 55 gallons of fish, and a flock of chickens in the yard.
